Prescriptive grammar (usage of language) Vs. Descriptive grammar (use of language)

Here is something basic about teaching English. It is whether teaching or not grammar.  Yes and No. Both answers are correct depending on some context-related thoughts. What is Prescriptive grammar? Prescriptive grammar is the rules and patterns taught in schools, discussed on teaching newspapers and magazines are protected by linguists organizations. that is, the grammar people should use in order to speak "correctly". For example:       Who did you see last night inside the movies?. This sentence, seen from a Prescriptive grammar view, has two mistakes. Although they continue being understandable, there are mistakes. A way to fix this could be:       Whom did you see last night at the movies? Those rules which tell us that we must use whom rather than who because it is the object of "see", are the Prescriptive grammar. Its main function is to lead us on the road for a "correct" way of speaking. Descriptive Grammar I...

Reflective text

As I had the opportunity to teach English to ninth graders for a month, and because of the very mind opener advises I received from the principal of that school, I began to look for the way to become an English teacher. It certainly wasn`t my first option when thinking about economical interests; but, it was the best option when having to select a job I enjoy doing. My first thoughts were that I needed a job where I could continue learning, feeling successful and having stability (economically and autonomously talking) while having fun in my workplace. I have always seen my teaching as dynamic, enjoyable and rigorous but I have detected a lack of qualities in my teaching (e.g. empathy and creativity, among others) in which I´m working now. Sometimes I feel minored by those education program students who have more experience, knowledge and clearer dispositions than I do, but I continue hoping for it to be a matter of age, commitment, learning, teaching experience and teaching knowle...

Are you a teacher or an educator?

Journal 1 - Talking about Teachers and  Educators j ournal 1, teachers and educators by Juan Felipe Naranjo Usuga is licensed  under  a Creative Commons Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike 3.0 Unported License .  According to Ruiz Amado there are three kind of "maestros". the first one is the "maestro genial", then the "maestro artesano" and "maestro artista". Both of them have their own characteristics but the one we would focus on, for the purpose of this post, is "maestro genial". Why? Because its main characteristic lies in his very natural way to teach. This master does not need to use pedagogy. He/she just needs to understand how to use the teaching resources and avoids any pedagogical matter, not because pedagogy is not important; but because of this master inborn way to teach.  This kind of master is quite near to what is said about our education in pedagogy. "We can be taught to be educators (talking ab...
