Quiero irme.

Image
He aprendido a vivir solo y disfru...

Uncertainty. Part 1

Went down the store to buy some ice cream. Came back to my apartment with some vainilla already melting on my right hand and sweeping sweat from my forehead with my left. Opened my door. Eyes fixed on the mess on my right hand. I listened two voices which I decided to ignore. Pass by the hall and got to the kitchen's door. Voices got louder. What's this? I opened the door and I see there are two old men talking. Their faces show we share a common question: Who are you?. We stare at each other for a while. They see I have an ice cream on my hand which, to them, means I'm not harmful... They're waiting for my answer; I'm waiting for theirs. 30 seconds went by easily. What's going on? Who are you and why are you in my kitchen? Did something break while I was out? The two guys kept looking at me. One turned his head to my ice cream and then to the window. It was snowing.  A brain malfunction caused by a poisoned or expired vainilla ice cream was my most certain gues...

Chang'an Tower

Built to resemble the architecture style of the Sui and Tang dynasties (618-907 AD). 99 meters high. 8 months of constructions. Near B ahe River in Xi’an.  This is the CHANG'AN TOWER  長安塔 ( Cháng'ān tǎ).

I'm feeling like leaving.

I arrived to China in 2019. It was around 4:00 pm of a November 16th. What I remember the most was the playfulness of my mind during the last hours of my flight. My hands played with the buttons of the screen in front of my seat; sometimes this monitor will only show me white or gray clouds but from time to time I would be amazed by brown and green fields.  My boss picked me up at the airport and I just remember to feel so safe once I heard someone calling my name. However, I felt the safest when meeting a friend who could speak my own language. I hugged her and thank God I could listen someone speaking Spanish after maybe 2 days of listening everyone speaking either in English or Chinese.  Almost two years now. Funny thing, I love the way I live in China but I feel like packing now even though I must still wait 4 months now. I really feel like leaving now. I succeeded. I ticked all my to-do's from 2020.  What did I gain? I have learnt to live alone and enjoy myself...

According to Paul Seligson.

I love reading and I am fond of articles dealing with language education and even more when those articles entirely report on my ways of teaching and beliefs about how students should be taught. Here's a little resume on what Paul Seligson answered during an interview to El País. Link is provided at the end of the post. Paul Seligson goes with this basic lines. We need to focus less on grammar and more on listening to become better speakers.  Nothing new yet. However, I must recognize he is implying many teachers are obsessed with grammar rather than English as a communicative asset. Rajoy, president of Spain, wants every college student to hold, by the end of their careers, a B2 proficiency level. deadline: ten years. I'm leaning towards thinking he'll not make it. Colombia has already prorogued their goals. "Think in English" is a misleading dogma. Students should be able to use Spanish to find meaning in English since they're linked by Latin as...

Let's talk about Drug abuse

Drugs certainly are part of a high-quality illegal business which reports thousands of millions of dollars to the drug cartels. Drug abusers spend (I don't want to say waste since some may be offended) their money in a moment of freedom which couldn't be reachable, according to them, by doing other activities. I'm sorry if you are a pro-drugs teacher and you may feel I'm talking your substances down but I can't hide my anger against a thing that brings nothing but sadness. Claimed my position, I would love to discuss with you some key factors and behaviors that define drug abuse, and to find which organ contains the explanations for the former. Any repetitive action that causes harm to a person is called either abuse or addiction. Eating for example, is a repetitive action that without causing harm cannot be labeled as an addiction since it gainfully adds to one's life span. Conceive a person who is undergoing gambling addiction; this person, by all means, w...

Physical Education: Required or optional?

Prolog This texts answers to a prompt within Barron's Essential word for the IELTS Student's book, which I'm carefully learning from. I invite you to share comments. Physical Education: Required or optional? Physical Education is a subject that has been overlooked as it has happened with other school programs such as music and arts. Having sports or gymnastics at school will gainfully add to students' psychosomatic health and social skills; making it a mandatory field of learning. It is well known that those students who practice a sport are more willing to eagerly learn  other subjects. Pupils who don't work out, tend to get deeper into a sedentary life which would possibly result in chronic diseases such as diabetes, cancer, nervous breakdowns, and so on. Mental health is another factor to look at. Playing a sport enriches students' goals and life style; challenges them to improve on their skills and to look after being the best; and teaches the...

Life is...

A know-it-all before it's too late. A friend once told me I've got to know Paris before I die; other, told me I should have a threesome so I don't regret about anything when my number's up. Many suggestions I have heard, and most of them take me to do something I would really happily do. However, as far as I live, I don't care for Paris.

Amor tras amar.

- ¿Recuerdas lo mucho que me amabas antes de que me amaras? - preguntó ella posando sus manos sobre el pecho descubierto del hombre que la ha acompañado por 30 años. -No entiendo. ¿Amarte antes de amarte? - si.

Learning about learning

As far as we are from having a world in peace, that's how far we are from learning how every individual learns. I don't want to enlight anyone with all repetitive theory, which at some point seems to have the same problems religions have: all ways of seeing religion (education, and pedagogy if you will) appear to be too right and too wrong; and, though they (religion and theories of education and pedagogy) seem to complement each other, none are appreciated when together. You've got to pick sides and stick there. Education seems to be the solution, as well as pedagogy is the problem; and viceversa. Shall we ever find a perfect symbiosis in both? I truly expect so; however I still consider that war, social inequality, and educational unfulfillness will outlive anyone reading these words. Greetings from a world lover and a society hater.

When educating... when to go beyond denotation of a word?

the denotation of a word is the actual meaning of it. As an example, take the word tree and define it: "a  tree  is a  perennial   plant  with an elongated stem,  or  trunk , supporting branches and leaves in most species." Taken from:  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tree This does not end here. The word "tree" can be used in many ways. Just be aware of what we call a "family tree".  It is not a tree that belongs to a family, and I am not talking about a family whose last name is Tree; instead of this I am approaching to a "genealogical tree"; a chart showing the descent and relationship o all members of a family or genealogical group.  In those two cases, the word "tree" changed. It was not a plant anymore. It was something different.  Should english language learners be familiar with the variety of changes that a word may take? The answer, walking around my mind, is: YES! Of course everystudent should know...

Let´s go to adverbs as quickly as possible.

Image
Ok, so we have talked about the adjectives and how to teach the adjectives , next what I want to do is to take a look into adverbs which can give us a really hard time when dealing with them. I am taking a writing course at canvas.net and it was really helpful to learn so much things about how to use adverbs; therefore, I totally recommend this kind of free online courses. Anyhow, Adverbs are different from adjectives because the first ones modify verbs instead of nouns. let´s check it: Are these in-red words modifying a noun or a verb? 1. I read a book quickly 2. I read a big book 3. She runs slowly 4. She is a slow runner The verbs from the sentences one and three are been modified by the words "quickly" and "slowly"; then, they are adverbs. the words "slow" and "big" are qualifying the book and the girl; therefore, they are adjectives. There are adverbs of manner which tell us how something is/will be/was done. oftenly...
